Around the city of San Rafael they have many attractions for the activity of High Mountain. Southwest of the city, just 35 km from downtown San Rafael, already can see the first colors that make up the Sierra Pintada. It is part of the nature reserve of the same name and is characterized by its ocher, red and green colors.
Following the national, to 142 km from the town route 144, is Sosneado: a rugged area suitable for all kinds of outdoor activities like camping, horseback riding, mountain biking and trekking. From there you can also access the lake of the same name, enabled for fishing and diving. To delve further we found the ruins of the old Hotel Thermal, which still has pools with thermal water outdoors, and the Cueva del Indio, rich in native culture. This circuit is operable from November to March.
Walking further west, in the middle Andes, the majestic volcano Overo is located. Its height is 4619 meters, making it suitable for climbing higher, and being a dormant volcano is crowned by eternal glaciers.
Near the volcano you can visit the Laguna del Atuel, also in Sosneado district. In this lagoon the eponymous river, which supplies water to a large segment of the Southern Oasis born. It feeds on thaws and is in the vicinity of a sulfur mine, abandoned in 1976. In 2012, the Laguna del Atuel was named Water Natural Reserve of San Rafael.
