Toro Water Reservoir
It is located in the so-called Pampa Amarilla , 89 km from San Rafael and 1,300 meters above sea level , on the middle reaches of the Río Diamante . The dam is a double curvature and was built entirely of concrete embedded in the rock. Forming a lake of 1,050 where you can enjoy various water sports , including: sailing, rowing, power boating, diving and windsurfing.
The complex was opened in 1982. Its purpose is manifold: regulation of flows for power generation , irrigation and flood mitigation . Alternative is used for tourism purposes.
Laguna del Diamante
The Laguna del Diamante is located at the foot of Maipo volcano in the center of a volcanic crater 3,230 feet high , containing a mirror of intense turquoise water . It Provincial Nature Reserve since 1995 , protecting the important reservoir of fresh water in the lagoon , flora and fauna of the high mountains including guanacos , foxes , the rodent ” tunduque ” condor – the largest flying bird in the world- the cauquén ( a species of wild goose) , and in the lower areas, or rhea rhea .
The name Laguna del Diamante is because the reflection of the Maipo in the deep blue water mirror forms the image of a gemstone . This powerful vision is the heart of this enchanted place.
The lagoon is fed by meltwater and forms the headwaters of the Diamante River. Its area is 1400 hectares, a maximum depth of 70 meters . and the average of 38 mts . It is a spectacular freshwater reserve of about 517 million m3 .
