In San Rafael there are several areas that help keep the history of the city and the region. The most important is the National Museum of Natural History, which is located 7 km south of the city in River Island Diamante. It has an astronomical observatory facilities, zoology, paleontology and geology and mineral exhibition hall, plants and archaeological material. It is operating since 1956, on the initiative of a group of students of the National College Ignacio Molina, by Humberto Lagiglia, director of the museum.
Another historic institution is the Museum of Fine Arts, which works in conjunction with the Mariano Moreno Library. Founded in 1948, it is located in Bernardo Irigoyen 148, and its aim is to promote the visual arts in San Rafael. It is dedicated to contemporary painting and sculpture. It was created in 1948 thanks to a donation of paintings by a recognized marriage in the city, and has more than 300 works, including works by great artists such as Spilimbergo, Quinquela Martin and Antonio Berni.
Following the tour of historical museums, we find the Railway Museum of San Rafael. It works since 2000 in the former train station located between the streets Rivadavia and San Martin. In total, four rooms of the station were turned into the museum, and the staff is dedicated to sightseeing but also to the production of handicrafts, which function as souvenirs for the kids.
Finally, it is interesting to visit the Military History Museum in San Rafael, only inside the country due to their building characteristics. It is a museum seat, where once worked the Command and Administration of the National Table. Data from 1890 and adobe walls are crude. The brick floor is coated with a protective glass to keep intact and original gates are way boards. It is located at Av. Mitre 5500.
