TOURIST CIRCUIT: DIAMANTE RIVER CANYON
The river is born at the Laguna del Diamante at the heart of the
High Andes. The basin is used for the production of
hydroelectric energy. The circuit includes the following places:
Dique Los Reyunos, El Tigre Dam, Galileo Vitale Dam and Villa 25
de Mayo each with its particular charm.
VILLA 25 DE MAYO
Villa 25 de Mayo is 25 kilometers from San Rafael and looks like
a living museum with its old adobe houses and streets lined by
ancient trees; the village sprang up after the foundation of the
San Rafael del Diamante Fort (2 April 1805) as the need arose
for a supportive village. The fort was declared Historical
National Monument.
GALILEO VITALE DAM
This was the first engineering work built on the Diamante with
the aim of using the waters for irrigation by distributing it
through a complex system of locks in concrete canals. It is
located 27 kilometers from the city and offers a terrific view
with many trees special for recreational activities and camping.
On the lower part one comes across the Diamante Basin 4th
Hydroelectric Central called Los Coronoles.
