TOURIST CIRCUIT: ATUEL CANYON
Upwards of the Valle Grande Dam one comes across the Atuel
Canyon, a living presence of the world’s origins sculpted by
wind and rain and shaping the most extraordinary formations.
Some of them are so perfect that they have been baptized through
the years: “The Wax Museum”, “The Old Men”, “The Monsters”, “The
Beggar”, “The Hanging Gardens”, “The Haunted City” and “The
Lizard” amongst many others.
The minerals and rock formations of the Canyon mesmerize and
marvel with their shapes, and seen from the buses whilst they go
around the steep curves, they appear and disappear looking like
slippery sculptures.
There are also two artificial lakes, Aisol and Tierras Blancas
which make the landscape even more magnificent.
By following the road between El Nihuil and Valle Grande,
driving past Nihuil I, II and III, one arrives at a cleft of
the Canyon called Cañadón Negro or Toboganes, where by
walking a few meters on sand between monumental rocky walls
one climbs a flight of steps and comes upon natural
toboggans, faults in the huge walls and the biggest of
prizes: absolute silence to enjoy such a setting.
The pebbled road continues along the canyon with rocky walls
of up to 350 meters of height before arriving at Valle
Grande. This dam is also ideal for practicing adventure
tourism sports like rafting, jet-skiing, swimming, diving,
rappel, and Tirolese, or, simply lie on one of the small
beaches, sit by the river or make it into a spa day…
On the last leg of the return trip to the city, there are
new landscapes to be enjoyed, lovely colors and tree lined
bungalows.
