HIGH MOUNTAIN CIRCUIT
By taking paved Provincial Route 173, and driving 37
kilometers out of the city one reaches the Atuel Canyon at Valle
Grande. The vegetation one finds at this spot is luscious and
one hears the murmuring waters of the Atuel River
running over rocks.
This is a place that opens the door to the sure enjoyment of a
special holiday by being so very close to nature.
The wall of the Valle Grande dam forms a huge emerald water
mirror which is a great temptation for the practice of swimming,
diving, water skiing, rowing, water motor sports, windsurfing,
etc.
SALINAS DEL DIAMANTE
This is an area resembling Patagonian landscape with 2,500
hectares of salt-covered terrain, 1,000 of which are
commercially exploited for salt.
EL SOSNEADO
El Sosneado is located 142 kilometers from San Rafael. There is
a hostelry on the road used as a base camp for excursions. A
road bordering the Atuel River takes one to the El Sosneado
Laguna, good for diving and fishing and on to the Cueva del
Indio (the indian’s cave) which bears witness to preceding
cultures.
The ruins of the formerly famous Hotel Termal El Sosneado also
stand here, and they still keep the open air pool with the
thermal waters that are well-known for their curative powers.
Nearby, towards the West, is the site where a Uruguayan Rugby
team plane crashed against the side of a mountain in the early
seventies. The remains of the plane are still there. Some of the
players survived and the story is told in the “Viven” book
(“Alive”).
